Living in Machias

As the easternmost point of the United States, Downeast Maine is the perfect spot for University of Maine at Machias students to explore. From the surf and sand at Roque Bluffs State Park, to the world’s highest tides (sometimes more than 50 feet!) at the Bay of Fundy, UMM students can take advantage of the endless opportunities for study and fun that the area provides.

With its rich historical past as the site of the first naval battle of the American Revolution, Machias is one of the safest small towns in New England. It’s just 65 miles from Acadia National Park, 300 miles from Boston, and 500 miles from New York City.

If you love the great outdoors, you’ll enjoy Machias’ outdoor recreational opportunities, including kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and skating. Prefer to stay indoors? Machias also offers art galleries, antique shops, restaurants, and performing arts activities.
