Safe Zone Trainings at UMM

ODP, UMM’s Human Rights and Advocacy Collegiate Fraternal Organization, and the Diversity Committee are co-sponsoring Safe Zone trainings. You are invited--and encouraged--to attend one of the upcoming sessions here on the UMM campus!

Safe Zone trainings have been scheduled on both February 25 and March 25, 2010. On each date there will be two one-hour sessions, 11:00 am to Noon and 1:00 to 2:00 pm. All sessions will be held in Clipper Lounge.

Safe Zone workshops are intended to help you strengthen your ability to support LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender) students, faculty and staff. LGBT people represent a significant minority population at our universities. Although campus climate has improved substantially over the years, LGBT people still sometimes experience negative environments and bias-related incidents. Safe Zone projects established at higher education institutions have been very successful in improving the campus experience for this group.

At the conclusion of your training session, you will receive a sticker to display at your office/work space. The sticker is an easily recognizable symbol that says you are a person who accepts and affirms people of all sexual orientations. The sticker represents your office/work space as a safe haven for all.

Please respond to Betty Kelley, bkelley@maine.edu 255-1211, to register for the Safe Zone training session of your choice. A maximum of 30 participants per session can be accommodated, so please register at your earliest convenience.
