Machias Schoodic Sculpture Project

As part of UMM's Centennial Celebration, the University partnered with the Town of Machias and the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce to bring a sculpture from the 2009 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium to Machias!
The Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium is a biennial cultural event that brings together world renowned artists, visitors and communities to create a Public Sculpture Collection in Eastern Maine. The Symposium was based at the Schoodic Education and Research Center on Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park from July 25 through September 12, 2009.
The Machias sculpture was crafted primarily from nearby Jonesboro granite by distinguished sculptor Jhon Gogaberishvili who is from the Republic of Georgia. The work was installed on “College Hill” in the fall of 2009 and is an impressive landmark visible from Route One. Machias has the distinction of being the only Washington County sculpture site from the 2009 Symposium. A formal dedication will be planned for spring 2010.

Donations for the Project:
The on-site creation of this impressive work of public art and its installation came at a considerable cost. We are grateful to the many sponsors and donors who helped make the Machias sculpture a reality and are still gratefully accepting donations toward the project. All donors to the Machias Schoodic Sculpture Project will be listed in the next Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium Catalog. Thank you for your support!
