Section: Smoke-Free Policy

The University of Maine at Machias is dedicated to providing a healthful, comfortable, and productive learning and working environment for our students, faculty, and staff.

The Environmental Protection Agency concluded in a 1993 report that:

"Secondhand smoke is as dangerous as other known cancer-causing agents such as benzene and asbestos.

The simple separation of smokers and nonsmokers within the same air space may reduce, but does not eliminate, the exposure of nonsmokers to environmental tobacco smoke."

In lights of these and related findings, effective September 1, 1994, smoking will be strictly prohibited within all areas of al University buildings (except selected student rooms in the residence halls). This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, guests, and visitors.

Copies of this policy shall be distributed to the entire campus community. "No-smoking" signs shall be posted at building entrances and throughout individual buildings.

Those employees and students who smoke and would like to take this opportunity to quit are invited to participate in stop-smoking programs offered by the University. Contact the Campus Nurse, extension 1275.

The success of this policy will depend upon the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of smokers and nonsmokers. All of us share in the responsibility for adhering to and enforcing the policy. Any violations should be brought to the attention of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President of Student Affairs, or the appropriate supervisor. Persons who violate this policy will be subject to the same disciplinary actions that accompany infractions of other University policies or regulations.
